Indian Turnip (not really edible!)

This probably doesn't belong here but my guess is you guys are the most likely to know what I am talking about. When I was a teenager a long time ago I was visiting a friend's grandfather along with my friend. He took us into the woods for a nice nature walk. He dug up a little bulb root thing cleaned it up with his penknife and sliced it for both of us to eat. He started laughing real evil like and I quickly found my mouth feeling as if I had eaten crushed glass. I was convinced he was killing us both for giggles and was going to bury us in the woods or something. When it finally wore off and he quit laughing he called it "Indian Turnip" which someone else told me was Jack in the Pulpit. Curious if anyone else ever went through this evil ritual :-) ???

Yeah, a guy in New Brunswick pulled the same trick on me, he almost fell down he was laughing so hard.
