Shore Bird Time

Those of you river and wetland type photographers, the shore bird migration is starting to get underway. Last report I saw from the Conejohela flats reported 8 different species of shore birds. So Mark, Steve, etc...if you are looking for something different...birds from all over the globe...literally, I would love to see some pictures of them!

Last year I found a Western Sandpiper at Wildwood.

Found this neat pic on flickr, a Hudsonian Godwit banded in Chile, photographed in Massachusetts!

Re: Shore Bird Time

Mark - I think that the flats is the best concentration daily of shore birds locally, there are some ponds near Chambersburg that attract a lot and of course Middlecreek has its days...but any muddy flat along the river could entice them to land after a night of traveling. I should have mentioned before, I have not yet been there, unfortunately, but I think you need a kayak or boat to get to the flats...not sure though.

The link below is a link to the PA bird listserv...it includes many reports of all kinds of birds, you just have to watch for the shore bird reports. Migrating shore birds are notoriously tricky to ID...I just ordered two books to help me out when I go to Sunset Beach in a couple weeks. The peek is typically the beginning to mid-August, but they have started now and can lag into September.
