Did not want to hijack stikbow's thread so i will start this. We also have had hawks hanging around the past few years mainly near the bird feeders. They seem to be very successful catching birds and squirrels there. I snapped these pics 2 years ago in our driveway while splitting wood, heard noise behind me eased into the truck for the camera. It was more than cooperative with it's red squirrel breakfast.
They are supreme hunters, they take everything from turkey poults to mice. They were able to wipe out our wild pheasants and quail, and have grouse wiped out in many areas. They also reduce the rabbits. Redtails may be bigger but these things are fast and fearless. They catch their prey flying , running or sitting. If you have small game numbers to high these things will reduce numbers fast.
