Who Cooks For You?

While visiting my property last weekend, I was surveying what needed to be done in the garden area and planning to plant a couple grape vines, I heard the familiar call of a barred owl. I thought it a little strange since it was around noon. It sounded fairly close and I had my camera handy so I headed into the woods chasing the calls. I got to an area that had a few blow downs so it was relatively open. I sat down with the sun to my back and the hemlocks in front of me. I heard one and then another owl call, both out in front of me a little ways. I have called owls in before with just my voice so I gave a call which was responded to immediately. The next time the "real" owl called the gobbler sounded his displeasure! This went on for a few minutes, me, owl 1, owl 2, and turkey! Then, out of the hemlocks, one of the owls flew in to my calls and lighted in a tree within camera range. I was able to click off about 4 shots in about 5 seconds and it was gone. The gobbler moved on and became silent, but the owls kept at it with me in between for about an hour! I did see them both again but just for a second. I tried to get between them and stop calling hoping that they would come together and pose for me but that was just wishful thinking. I hope they decide that the accommodations are good and that they start a family back there.

Great picture. Looks like he leaned away from the branch so you could get a better picture of his face

Not only is my short-term memory horrible, but so is my short-term memory.
