[censored] Thief

Made a trip for the shorties on Friday afternoon and wasn't disappointed really cool to see how they hunt in the snow. They can actually hear the voles under the snow, hone in on them and wham, without even seeing them. This one made the mistake of not chowing down on the spot though, along came Mr. Harrier and snatched the vole right out from under him, darn thief !!

Nice photos Steve!
I stopped out from 5-530 today and did not see anything. Was just passing through the area.

Re: [censored] Thief

These are terrific shots. Factoid on owl hearing: Years ago I saw a video on owls and among the fascinating things that were revealed was the amazing hearing that they posses. Some of that remarkable capability is due to the shape of the owls round face and the construction of a channel of feathers around the outside perimeter (just under thin surface feathers) that serves as a kind of radar dish that picks up sound waves and actually channels them into the ear holes on the side of the owls head. The owls face then serves as a collection dish for sound and a feed to its ears.

Good night Chesty, wherever you are......

That's kinda strange, but then again it only lasted about an hour the other day.

You know I didn't really think about it too much till I started seeing them landing in the snow. I just saw a program about two weeks ago that was all about their "Super Powers" but it was mainly about Barn Owls so I wasn't too sure about the shorties since I have never seen them where there was snow cover. Silent flight is another one of their super powers. I just did a quick search online and found the program, well worth watching. The link is below:

Heard they came out at dusk. I could not stay long. Maybe some evening this week since I now have some light after work with the time change.
