Shutter Speed Demo

So it was way too cold to take my photography club kids outside on Wednesday, so I set up a little "experiment" in my classroom to demonstrate shutter speed for them. I thought some of you might like the results. Great perk to being a science teacher too!

They are 5th - 8th grade so I kept it simple and fun...sparklers!

Any suggestions for future indoor activities? I was going to do a cluster of Christmas lights to demonstrate aperture if I have to be inside again.

Re: Shutter Speed Demo

Neat pics !!!
So what settings did you use for the pics and what settings for aperture on your next project ?

The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Re: Shutter Speed Demo

This has the looks of a fast shutter and a wide open f/s. I'm sure your kids had to enjoy this!

Re: Shutter Speed Demo

For these shots most were between 1/250" and 4" shutter speed and the f/5.6 and f/11...ISO on most were 100 but a few were 400.

If you click on each picture it will take you to Flickr and the info for each shot is below the picture.

Wish I had a class like that when I was a kid.

Re: Shutter Speed Demo

You could use Christmas lights as a background to show the effects of aperture to achieve bokeh. I was experimenting with aperture as well as focus just on the lights and got some interesting results that could be used as a composite. Making the little cutouts to use on the cheap fast 50mm lens could also be very creative and fun!
