Chestnut tree

Bear hunting my property yesterday I was dismayed to find a lot of my chestnut trees had been ruined with the ice on the limbs. One in particular (my best) had been broken off 3 ft high with only 1 branch remaining. 2 yrs ago I cut a bunch of poplar and have been fighting stump sprouts eversince. Should I cut this tree off say 2 ft high and try to grow a stump sprout of graft a branch on it. There are large oaks on my property that have grown from stump sprouts.

I'd let it go. A new central leader should sprout in the spring.
LONZO, CROW MASTER and Laylow like this.

I'd remove the dead limb about a half inch out from the main trunk and like Bassblaster said, let it grow. What particular species of chestnut is this you are growing? I have been wanting to get some to start just haven't gotten there yet.

Sadly most of my life has been wasted, but the rest I spent hunting, fishing, and trapping...

Let the tree grow and see what happens.

It should grow a new leader as said.

Let it go. Deer will kill it before the freeze.
