GAME COMMISSION SUSPENDS SEEDLING SALES TO PUBLIC
HARRISBURG, PA - Tree and shrub seedlings from the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Howard Nursery will not be offered for sale to the public in 2018 due to drastically low inventories.
Seedlings will continue to be supplied to participants in the Seedlings for Schools Program, as well as to landowners who open their lands to public hunting through the Game Commission’s Hunter Access Program, but there are too few seedlings to offer for public sale.
The Game Commission hopes to resume seedling sales to the public in 2019.
The existing seedling shortage is due to germination failure in a couple of conifer species.
The Game Commission’s annual seedling sale – a way to benefit wildlife statewide by improving habitat – has been popular with the public. Sales typically open in mid-January, and the variety of seedling offered varies from year to year.

Would you mark this as another failed government program? How many private nurserys suspend sales for an entire year?

I think that if you dig a little you will find that the failure is mostly in the funding. Germination issues may be part of the problem and are a convenient scapegoat, but my plantings don't do very well either if I don't spend some time taking care of them.

Germination shortage was in a couple of conifer species. What about all the other species??????
I believe there is more to this than a germination shortage......

PGC will use what's available for its own projects, as well as the seedlings for schools program. There are lots of other good sources for seedlings. Read through this forum to find alternatives. Check your local county co-ops too.
