Save the chestnuts, put them in the refrigerator and plant them next spring flat side down.

Should he be putting them in the freezer rather than the fridge? I thought they needed below freezing conditions to mature.....

Don't freeze. Chestnuts need cold temperatures above freezing to stratify and cause germination.
