There are a number of guides on the net that describe how to identify various chestnuts. Shape of the leaf and hairs on the underside are important characteristics. However, they hybridize easily so combinations of various chinese, korean, japanese, european, and american can be difficult to ID.
But you saw the nuts and those are another indicator. A pure American chestnut is a small nut, dime to nickel size. If the nuts you received were larger than that, they are not pure American. Chinese can be medium to large size. Dunstan's were bred from large nut chinese varieties. Many European chestnuts are quite large.
