Need some advice

My English Setter is nearing the end of his life with kidney disease. He can barely walk, and we have to feed him and water him while he lays on the floor. He does not appear to be in any pain, but his quality of life is very poor... How does one know when to put a dog down

Re: Need some advice

Sorry to hear about you English Setter. I hate to say this but I think now is the time to put him down. Remember the good times. I have been there and it is a hard decision to make. You have to do what is best for him.

Re: Need some advice

I agree, its a hard pill to swallow, but when the quality of life isn;t there, and they cannot get by well
it starts to be more about you not wanting to let go, that the good of the dog(family member)
putting dopwna down is a HRAD thing to do
but you have to think about how the dogs is living, at some point the quality is more taxing on them than you
and at that point, its time to say goodbye
something you MIGHT consider is SOME GOOD vets will come to the house to do the deed, rather than taking them to the vet for the last time
to some it doesn't matter, to others, being in a place they enjoy is a better memory for all
just something to think about maybe

and sorry, I know how it [censored] to be in this spot, makes you really wish they could talk!

Re: Need some advice

Very hard thing to do. Sometimes making that decision is very tough and you'll think about it for years. I've been down that road many times. Everytime I bring a pup into the house I tell myself that day will come. I have a Brit on the floor next to me right now that just turned 17. Still can go out, no mistakes in the house but that days coming. Remember all the decisions over the years were made for the best of the dog.

I'm so far behind I think I'm in first place.

Re: Need some advice

Sorry to hear this as I know how hard it is to put down a pet. We had to put down our fox red lab two months ago and I cried like a baby, but it was the right thing to do. She deserved better and we smile often while remembering the many, many good times and outright joy she brought to our collective lives. She will always be missed but is no longer suffering so we know we did the right thing.

You will know too.

My thoughts are with you.

You'll know its not about you but him very sorry.

As Charles Barkley says, "I may be wrong, but I doubt it".

Re: Need some advice

Had to make that decision a month ago with my setter. She did not have kidney disease but her legs could no longer carry her. It was an extremly haed thing to do but it was the right thing.

Re: Need some advice

sorry to say but its sounds like now is the time.
I had to put my pointer down last fall due to lymphoma.
it was a devastating thing to go through as a family and still pains me now.

but he was a family member and the best pet we could ever ask for. so in our hearts we knew it was the time we had to be there for him.

I wanted no regrets so I walked him inside, and when it was time we looked him right in the eye and thanked him for taking good care of us.

sending a prayer up now that your family finds strength in knowing your doing the right thing.

I agree, if you are asking you already know.
It is never easy.
