NWTF project in Camp Michaux, Michaux State Forest

Quite a few years back, there was a NWTF project in the old Camp Michaux. I was walking through it this past Flintlock season, and was wondering what the status of it is. Is there going to be more work done in that area? This part of the state is seeing our first fall turkey season (3 day) in 7 years because of low pop numbers. I figured with low numbers, there would be more projects in this area, but this one has been sitting without additional work done for some time. Thanks for any info!

Bunch of areas in Michaux the NWTF has worked at, not just Camp Michaux. Probably 1/2 dozen or so just with a mile or so of Camp Michaux I can think of off the top of my head. I imagine just the open, grassy areas alone are a benefit. There are crabapple trees planted as well.

Yeah I saw the crabapple trees. I didn't know there were more than just that 1 NWTF sites back in there. I just knew of that one. Where abouts are there others?

Re: NWTF project in Camp Michaux, Michaux State Forest

Each year the 4 local chapters sponsor and help fund habitat projects done in partnership with DCNR BoF habitat crews. They are all over the SF from the Maryland line up to Mount Holly.

Over the past 20 years I can not begin to tell you how many habitat projects have been successfully completed, how many PA Chapter Super Fund Habitat Dollars have been spent on habitat projects on MSF.

The local chapter volunteers continue to do work with MSF habitat staff and work to improve the herbaceous openings as directed by the District Forester.

The old tree nursery you mention has been idle lately due to the increased work being done on many of the herbaceous openings, and additional habitat project sites the MSF habitat staff and NWTF volunteers are working to complete.

The state forest is 89,000 acres and it will take a lifetime for volunteers and staff to reach out and touch a fraction of that state forest habitat environment.

The more help we have the more work can be done. All you have to do is volunteer your time.

MSF office maintains a map of all the herbaceous openings and can tell you about habitat improvement projects.
