The trick here is finding a bullet that is strong enough to stay together through hide, fat and heavy muscle AND yet still open at the velocities you will get from a substantially shortened tube.If I have time this weekend I will go through my Encore/Contender data.
Buy another barrel for a bear gun! The .270 may work but you are way under gunned. They are marginal out of a rifle let alone a hand gun. The 35 Remington would be a way better round out of the T/C.
I have personally tracked bear due to high speed bullets out of a 270 that explode upon impact only to lose a bear... Im no Peta member but a wounded or maimed animal sickens me!
Alot of guys seam to be turning towards Barnes for bigger game. Not sure what Barnes has figured out in bullet technology, but I'd start looking there.

That's what I'm talkin' about!!! People don't realize that there is a night and day difference in a 270 rifle and a 270 from a 15" tube. The loss in energy makes the 270 pistol comparable to the 6.8 If you want a bear pistol get a 375 JDJ.I have shot the 309,375 JDJ for years, for an all around pistol the 375 does it all.It is great for deer, bear and hogs.J.D.Jones has killed elephants with this caliber from one of his pistols.THE 270 IS NOT A BEAR CARTRIDGE.
