What to do with deer skins?

For the folks who process their own deer....what do you do with your deer skins? I used to give all my skins to a full time trapper who then would re-sell them to a tannery, but he has retired. I stopped by a processor this morning and he said he just throws his in the dumpster. I 'd rather the skin be put to good use than just being thrown away. Any help would be appreciated.

Problem is, no one wants to buy them anymore. Used to be the fashion Industry bought them but with all the liberal don't wear animal skins crap tht market dried up. No one can gt rid of them. At one time the WCOs skinned and salted and saved the hides from illegal and road killed deer. They were stacked on Pallets in Game lands buildings until bid proposals were sent out and they were sold. Then them bottom dropped out of the market and you were lucky to get a bid of a dollar or two a hide. That ended the saving and selling of deer hides.

I'm going to freeze some pieces of my buck's hide (below what the taxidermist needs) and use that as a training tool with my dogs to start them on tracking for wounded game.

I would bet if you could locate UBT members in your area, they'd be interested in the feet and hide and liver/blood from your deer.

try contacting a local taxidermist and see if he would be interested or tell of somebody who could help you out

I remember getting $9 from a local fur buyer for good hides back in the late 70s. They have been selling in the $3 range for the last 20 years. There’s usually buyers for deer hides at PTA district fur sales. Trade tariffs and the ongoing trade problem with China have caused problems for those selling deer and beef hides. I see where the processor where I donate deer has been saving them, but most butchers aren’t buying them from the public.

For many years the Boy Scouts had barrels set up in Clearfield where you could donate them. They would then salt them and sell them to raise funds for their troop. I think that ended a while back.

You could try flyfishing shops. They use them for tying flies.

I'm just a stones throw from Clearfield, wish the Boy Scouts still had that. I'm not looking to make any money just want the deer skin to go to good use. I'll call a few taxidermist tomorrow and see what I come up with.
