Schooled.

Called in another coyote tonight. Vocals. On stand about an hour and fifteen minutes. When I seen eyes I turned on the ol vole squeaks on the FoxPro. Then you might as well say I watched it go to work and show me how it’s done. It took off on a slow run and I knew it was headed down wind but for a minute I thought it might actually be leaving. Usually they just angle to get down wind, this one made a big wide circle in the open field using the terrain and getting out of site. There was little air movement and it changed direction a few times during the set. Of course at this moment it was moving the one way that was detrimental for me. Anyway that coyote circled around me far fast and slick, popped up downwind and just as quick disappeared. I could have taken a shot when I first seen it but I felt confident I could get it closer. Well, I got schooled on what confidence looks like. I was sort of left in awe with an even greater respect for this intelligent animal. To you coyote, I tip my hat. Impressive.

Very!!..and you going SOLO makes it tougher.

I get schooled EVERY time out...

We've had them circle over 200 yards when using rodent/rabbit...lots of time out of sight for a minute or 3 which caused us to almost "panic scan" ..now one holds point(light off) and other turns down scan.

Do you think it might have changed the scenario if you had switched to a pup in distress call at some point? Would that have made it reconsider trying to get downwind and just come in? Just asking...I honestly have no clue. Just thought that someone with more experience than me might have come across this.

If your hunting in the snow wander around if you can after you are done calling, especially downwind. It's a humbling experience.

Donít know.
I considered it after it disappeared but figured once busted itís better to not offer it any more education than it already gained. Maybe it would have helped before it got down wind I canít say. I didnít call any more after that, just gathered up my things and quietly left.
Howls and the vole squeaks are all I did. So maybe after a few weeks I might get lucky from a different spot and different sounds.

The coyote has been teaching me for around 20 years now. I do not think graduation is in the near future.

I been calling predators in almost every state in the union and a few foreign countries for well over sixty years and they still teach me. Many times after calling when I arrive back at my truck I'll see their paw prints in my tire tracks and more than once I have had my tires "washed" by a coyote.

But I do think that most of the time we over complicate what we are trying to do. Just remember when calling we are playing checkers not chess.

I carry a gun because I'm to young to die and to old to take a ass whipping.
