Pretty good buck

Last friday of rifle season i was out hunting with beavsteve's brother. I had seen a small buck and a few does, but was getting pretty discouraged due to the very unfavorable ground conditions. Frozen leaves make for pretty tough stalking, but you can't pick the conditions and have to work with what you've got. i found myself in a fairly large, open marsh, and after sitting for a half hour or so, decided to call beavsteve's brother and see if he had been having any luck. he had seen a small buck or two, but nothing that presented a good shot. he figured he was about a half mile away from me and would walk in my general direction to see if he could get any deer moving. 10 minutes later i spot movement in a finger of brush, and immediately can tell it's a good buck heading my way. the buck was in full on sneak mode, and was clearly looking to avoid something behind it without giving away it's position with a tail up noisy flight. he came out of the brush on a sunken trail and stepped out into the open. he stopped briefly to look behind him and i decided this may be the only opportunity to shoot this buck while he's standing still. the trail he was on was pretty worn in, and because of this, the grass and weeds were up over his belly and i didn't want to risk a deflection trying to shoot through the weeds at his vitals. it was a split second decision, and when he turned his head back to face the direction he wanted to go, i took the best shot i had, and down he went. it was only about a 50-60 yard shot, and the 150gr soft point from the .308 hit him right where i wanted it to. after chambering another round i looked to my right and saw my buddy about 100 yards behind the deer. it was a perfectly executed one man drive. after the obligatory high fives and victory photos, i tagged him gutted him out and moved on to the arduous mile long drag out. he gave up the rest of his afternoon to help me get that monster out of the woods, and good thing, too, because i might not have been able to do it myself. he's going on the wall as my biggest buck to date. gross 146, net 132, from some pretty heavily hunted public land.

Slammer. Many congrats for that brute.

The sleep of a laborer is sweet, while the rich man tosses and turns, worried about his possessions.
