Antler repair...

A friend of mine asked me to do a repair on a broken antler for him. I used "magic sculpt" to fill in the areas around the repairs. The magic sculpt says it is stainable. The only problem is that the magic sculpt does take the stain like the antlers does and still does not match.
I've used Old English and regular wood stains without any success. Is my only option is to try to match it with paint and paint the antlers? If so what kind of paint do you recommend.
