Plastic skull mount

Anyone have any experience with a synthetic skull mount kit? My buck this year isn't worth a taxidermist fee, so I thought I'd do a little experimentation with the synthetic skull mount kits. Any recommendations?

Done properly you'll never know the difference. Make sure your cuts to the antler pedicles are precise and clean and on exactly the same angle and you'll have no problems.

I agree with Joe! Online they look great, but go to Cabelas, and they just terrible. It just looks to "plastic" to me.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

Re: Plastic skull mount

Agreed! I did my buck from last year with a Mountain Mikes and I'll NEVER do it again. No matter what I did I can not get the horns back on the same way they came off! And YES just looks to much fake...PLASTIC!!!

Re: Plastic skull mount

Well, as I said in my OP, (unfortunately) the antlers on my buck this year were nothing to get too excited about. I've done a few skull cap mounts on my own, and was looking for something different this year. Now, I dont want the project to turn out looking like a dog's hind end, but it wont bother me if it isn't a Mona Lisa either. Anybody try a kit that isn't Mountain Mikes?

There was an article about kits like that in the Game Newsa while back (July?) but I don't have the issue anymore.

Re: Plastic skull mount

order it from mckenizes do get the cheap ones from bass pro they are actually cost more an look cheap, an order small thing of 2 part epoxy clay they have get it in white and use that to smooth over the points where the skull meets the art. skull then if you want ou can give it a paint with white don't forget to use a pin to scratch in the lines where the skull fuses together, they look good it just seems overwhelming to try an do but it really easy.

From September to April my world revolves around hunting the rest is preseason.

Trust me these look a lot better then the ones at cabelas these have a lot of detail to them an you can always give it a flat clear coat to take the plastic look away
