Open weekends

Are you guys and gals open on weekends? I have been open 7 days a week for years now and it's starting to get old. Problem is I get a lot of work on them. I was wondering how others handle it. I know I need to weight the pros and cons I guess I'm looking for other ideas.

It's not the size of the shop, it's the quality of the work!

Re: Open weekends

Depends on what you do and if the money is worth the aggravation. If you do not need to personally be there hire someone part-time to be there. There are options if you are willing to make the change. I went from working every Saturday to two a month to one or none. I find that people can make it in during the week if they need to.

Re: Open weekends

Don't become a slave to your business Dave. Its very easy to get sucked into the mindset of "MUST be open". You have a phone and an answering machine that can be there when you're not. I can understand 7 days a week during gun season but the rest of the year---no way!

Re: Open weekends

I am not a taxidermist, but I would say as long as you stay open late at least one day a week, you should be alright.........I would think you could still do Saturday by appointment only, and schedule the appointment s when you have the time.......

The one late night would work for almost everyone......I have a hard time making it anywhere that is open 9-5 through the week, because I work 7-5 Monday-Friday, and sometimes I might be a couple hours from home.....so I might leave at 430, and get home at 730.......a 9-5 schedule makes it almost impossible for me to deal with those businesses, other than the weekend..

Re: Open weekends

For the last 8 years I've been open 9am-9pm 7 days a week 365 days a year. I tried the appointment on weekends only to find out that even though you have an appointment people still don't show up and when you call them after their an hour late they just don't answer the phone. So here I sit Sunday waiting on 3 people to show up and not one of them did or bother to call me. But on the other hand 3 deer and a speedgoat did. I think I'm past the burnt out stage Paul and am in robot stage. I do get a lot of work on weekends and am told it's because no one else is open. I know, I lot of you guys are thinking just be happy you have that much work. Maybe I need to move my weekend to Tuesday and Wednesday.

Re: Open weekends

Dave, they aren't coming to you on the weekends because you are the only one open they are coming to you because they know you are top notch.

As far as your schedule, I would start cutting back on some weekends. They say once your work isn't fun anymore then you have to start doing something else!

Me personally, I could spend hours just shooting the breeze with you and learning about the business but I can understand being burnt out.

Maybe every other weekend or one weekend a month is the way to do it.

If you let everyone know via your web site, word of mouth, and HPA then you probably won't miss out on much business.

Re: Open weekends

I've gone to afternoon-eve appt only and 7 days a week ( though if someone drops in when I am around, I don't get bent over it). I have an issue with people dropping in whenever, and an equal issue with people who are late or way too early and don't call to let me know. But I try not to show it. If they say "I'll be by between 4-5pm" and they show at 4:35, no issue there either.

Aside from that, I have been up to 11pm with the same guy before( he usually shows at 9-9:30 due to fishing all day, then we chat for a bit), and have had people concerned 8pm was too late but I told them it was no problem, since I am a night person. In general, the customers who come late and on sunday night or whatever, are repeats and good customers. They already know I have no issue if that is when they want to come by. They already know I am a wacky night owl artist.
