Duck Mount

Has anybody ever mounted a duck by using one of those kits you buy. How did it work, and did you have to buy any extra tools. Dont have alot of money right now. And I have two ducks that need done. I would like to spend no more than 150 for each duck

Re: Duck Mount

ducks are GREASY, they need to be properly fleshed (everything does) and prepped. If you want to do it yourself. go to http://www.taxidermy.net buy the manual and tools.

follow it step by step. you should be able to get everything for less than the 300.00 you are willing to spend on the mounts. You might also find a wholesale taxidermist there that would be willing to do them for you.

Good Luck.

Re: Duck Mount

Wholesale taxidermists do work for other taxidermists, you probably have to have taxidermist letterhead/card to show, or a copy of a taxidermy lisc.

Doing ducks yourself, you will probably make so many holes in the skins trying to remove the fat by hand, they won't be worth mounting. Most taxidermists use a fine wire wheel "duck box" to defat birds. The technique must be learned by trial and error using spare skins. Then the skin needs washed and degreased. Some taxidermists use Coleman fuel ( white gas) to degrease the already defatted skins.

In general sea ducks are less fatty and have tougher skin. Puddle ducks, esp mallards, are fatballs and have more delicate skin.

Re: Duck Mount

I have talked to two wholesale taxidermists that will do them way to cheap for me to even try it. One price was 140.00 a bird the other was 200.00 a bird. I might go with the guy for 200.00 because it is close to my house so no shipping fees involved. Also seen some of his pics looks like he does a good job. I still want to mount one by myself. Maybe next year?

Re: Duck Mount

Are you sure he will do one for you at wholesale prices? Like stated above, wholesale prices are usually given to a taxidermist from another taxidermist.

Re: Duck Mount

Yes I told both that I am not a taxidermist. They said that is no problem. The person that would do it for 140.00 does them wholesale for 100.00, so either one is a good deal.
