elk hide

ok i got my elk hide in the freezer and still pondering what to do. just spread it on the wall is one option. make it into leather, and then what to do with it? thinking belts or wallet. trying to do on the cheap so how hard is it to turn a hide to leather and then get someone to make something out of it like belts or handbags? anyone got any input?

Re: elk hide

Its a LOT harder than you think. Take it to a taxidermist and have him/her properly flesh and salt it and send it to a tannery for you. Elk skins are incredibly thick and require a LOT of shaving to be thin enough for a supple tan---trust me--you don't want to get into that!

Re: elk hide

My 2009 PA cow hide hangs on the wall of my son's taxidermy studio. I didn't have any place big enough to hang it at my place. It stretches out about 5 feet wide and nearly floor to ceiling. I just love visiting his place and looking at my elk and mule deer.
