Do you have a tail stripper?
If you carefully skin the first few inches clear of the base of the tail, place the stripper tightly around the tail just where yu stopped skinning, put your left hand on the rump of the animal, your right hand tightly on the stripper and pull hard. The bone/meat will pull out all at once and you can then split the rest of the underside of the "tube" where the bone pulled from.
If you have no stripper, use can substitute two metal rods-one on each side of the tail and grip tightly with the bone between your ring finger and middle finger and pull the same as with the stripper.-I did it this way for years-the stipper is easier.

BTW, every couple years I still break a tip off. It's really more damaging to my pride than the pelt.
