finished up my first wrapped body

Well i got the body wrapped. I kept it a little smaller than the measurments to allow for shrinkage. I took quilt batting and wrapped to match the measurements. Than i wrapped hemp rope over top of that for a smoother look. I may order a form as well to be on the safe side. But i had a lot of fun wrapping the body.

My question is That this squirrel was 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" the closest is 8 3/4 x 12 1/2. I really want to show how thick this guy was. Would you just keep the form or try and modify it. I really like the wrapped body because i can pose it anyway i want and get creative. I may preserve the skull and fill it in with clay as well instead of using the foam head i carved after i test fit it.

How do you keep the head in place?

Would you use borax or tan the hide?

What eyes do you like to use the best?

How should i go about unthawing the squirrel?

How long do i let it thaw?

I think i did pretty well for my first wrapped body and look forward to mounting the red squirrel that i had got the other day and wrapped a body for last night to test it out.

Wish me luck. And yes that is a keystone light in the back ground

Re: finished up my first wrapped body

I love wrapping bodies.....

These are just my "answers", others may have different methods.

1) I would use the real skull, clean the brains, eyes, meat, Hot glue a wire into the back of the skull, put wire into your "wrapped body" and then make a loop, putting the wire back into your wrapped body to snug it up.

2)I tan EVERYTHING, except birds. You can use a product called "Krowtann", it works well. I use Pro 1 tanning products. If I didn't have the ability to tan it, I would use DP (dry preserve, which has borax in it), I suppose just borax would work.

3)For small mammals like mink and squirrels, I use hollow "bubble" eyes

4)Take the squirrel out of the freezer, out of the bag, and place it in a room on a towel, and let it thaw at room temperature. Something the size of a squirrel should be thawed overnight, if you take it out the evening before.

5)Looks good for your first wrapped body....Squirrels are TOUGH to do

Also, the 8 3/4" body would work if you want to use that.

good luck, post some pics when you are done !

Re: finished up my first wrapped body

Thanks. I left the body at work so I wouldn't get to excited and try it early. Taking out the 22 tomorrow and try to get a few more practice squirrels. I will be taking my red squirrel out to try and mount him tonight. I may do the dead pose for possible fu7ture mounts plus I don't have any eyes yet. Lol I have an order for a bunch of bubble eyes in now.
