purchased a kit fron vandykes. It come with borax and a foam form.
I got a squirrel yesterday and attempted the mount. i had skinned it what i thought was well. I was wondering how far do you have to go to get the feet out. I was skinning down to about the fingers and pulled a little to hard and popped the front foot out. Ruined that mount idea so i used the borax and i am trying to jsut tan the hide for practice and fly tying material .
A few questions,
1) how clean do you have to get around the ears, nose, and feet areas.
2) how far do you guys typically cut the legs/hide down to stretch it over the manican.
3) do you do a cut the length of the tail or do you just skin it. I turned the whole thing inside out and didn't ruin the fur. i was attempting to apply borax to the inside of tail wich made inserting the wire and foam very tough.
The hide fit when i just fit it but i had to cut more of the feet off and when i did i ruined my attempt. Oh well there are plenty of squirrels out there for more tries.
Any insight will be appreciated.
