Hi guys, I was going to try to mount my first shoulder mount and saw these kits in the Van Dykes catalog. I have done some small taxidermy, but never a shoulder mount. Does anyone have any opinions on the kits? I do have a buddy that does his own and he said he could help if I need any help. Thanks in advance.
I went that route when I did my shoulder mount. It was a lot of work but fun. Taxidermists earn their money you will find out, but if you have someone to help I encourage you to do it. I shot the biggest buck of my life this year in archery and chickened out on doing it myself. Kind of kicking myself for that now but it was very warm and I did not have freezer space for the hide nor the time to do it. They have 3 different style kits at Van Dykes one is Van Dykes in house kit the other 2 have famous peoples forms and instructions. I think I would spend the extra $10 for one of them. Make sure you get the one with needle and thread. Everything I needed was there. Can't remember which tan formula it came with but it worked great. Take your time and look at lots of mounts and pictures ahead of time. I was never happy with the way my ears turned out and think I could do better if I tried again. There are lots of guys and gals on here that know TONS and I'm sure they will help.
Geez I just looked at it was over 7 years ago I did mine. Time flys. Anyhow this was my attempt with the Van Dyke's kit. Still resembles something in the deer family but lots of room for improvement. At the pace I am getting bucks worthy of mounting I will have it down to a science by the time I am 135 years old. It did have 3 broken tines. I know it is really split on repairing antlers or not I just wanted to see if I could do it. Anyone that knows what they are looking for could tell but it didn't turn out too bad.
