Antler repair to mounts ?

A general question I have about antler repairs during the taxi to make them look better than it was when you got the deer. I can understand if you shot the antler off or broke it off while dragging / handling, but really could never understand why anyone would want to make something look better than it was.

Just wanted to open this topic up to see what others feel about it. (I am not knocking this option to have antlers repaired to something nature did, just raising the question), as I know others have made racks more eye appealing than what it was at one time.

I think it is the dumbest thing ever. Its a lie. Whats the difference in doing this or shooting an 8pt and telling them to putty 2 extra points on because I think it would have looked better as a ten. Im glad you started this it is something that has always irked me!!!

I could see fixing a point if it broke, but increasing the size of the rack is pretty pathetic. Although, I did pay good money to have my wife's rack increased a size or two...

Stupid idea. My big ten on my wall would have a lot of extra inches... but he was a fighter. All tips except the brow tines are broken off... I think it adds character.

Re: Antler repair to mounts ?

I don't think I would ever mount any buck I kill but I save all the antlers, I usually do a skull mount. I would never get missing/broken points "fixed". It would make me feel that the rack was not the one I killed.

That said, it's none of my bussiness if somebody does it and doesn't have a problem with it.

I'll agree with that

And after you get enough things mounted....and realize you made your taxidermist rich enough.....You would wonder why anyone would pay the extra to have one enhanced?

Re: Antler repair to mounts ?

The buck I got mounted has a broken brow tine. I didnt get it repaired but sometimes I do look at it and wish it had that other brow tine. If the point was clearly broken then I dont see a problem in fixing it, why not return the deer to all its glory.

Its not about what you harvest, its about the time spent afield with family and friends.

Re: Antler repair to mounts ?

I don't think I would ever have an antler repaired, in fact the way I get the deer mounted is always the position it was in before my arrow hit it. That always takes me back to my memory of the animal.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

Re: Antler repair to mounts ?

Deep sea fishermen have been ahead of hunters for decades. I recall a couple of decades ago going into a fishing shop and there was this huge mounted fish behind the main counter.

I took a good look, and caught some employees attention.

"That's the finest plastic fish I ever saw."

My sarcastic jokes are often not well received.
