Have you ever buried a deer head ?

I just got my buck back from the processor and they gave me the whole cape. Rather than just cutting the horns of I was thinking about burying it and then mounting the skull later.
I was just wondering if any of you have ever done this and if so, how long do you wait before you dig it back up.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

From what I've read, you're going to dig up a big mess. Most that try it put it into an anthill. Keep in mind the ground is going to be freezing soon and there will be nothing feeding on the flesh. Plus, the expanding and contracting of the freezing ground could possible destroy the bone.

I have one outside on my back deck that a guy did that to. He wants me to now try to make it white for him. The skull is permanently stained, and the antlers are weathered. Your much better off removing all the major meat, brains, eyes, and simmering.

I agree. The antlers look very white and brittle after they have been out. That is if they have not been chewed on my rodents while it is out there. Might be better off contacting someone that has beetles.

Re: Have you ever buried a deer head ?

I have buried one in horse poop, make sure you cover the antlers with a plastic bag so squirrels don't eat them. it worked well, took time and then I had to bleach the skull. I have heard that if you put one in a trash bag then poke some holes it it you can leave it out in the sun and maggots will clean it. I was told this works well too. having said all of that . . . the next one I want cleaned will most likley for to Frank's. I have never had him do anything but he has a great rep on here and has answered questions for me in the past. seems like a really good guy.
