Dumb question...but here goes....

I was lucky enough to harvest a decent 9 pointer on Monday and never considered getting the head mounted. So in the process of butchering the deer ourselves, I proceeded to cut the antlers off at the skull plate like I always do. Now I am kinda wishing I would have decided to go with a head mount. Is it possible to do a mount from just the horns or is it too late and chock it up to another life lesson?

Thanks

Thats what the taxi would do anyway. Except when they capped it they would have left the hide intact. Provided that you did not massacre the cape they may be able to fix it for you. Or the other option is to use a hide from another deer...

I would ahve put that one on the wall in a min. Nice buck!

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

They should be able to hook you up, might cast a bit extra.

Only thing you lost is the cape. Go to a deer processor and put an order in for one off another big deer that isn't getting mounted. Now's the time, don't delay.

Stand up and be counted, join an outdoor sports organization

Re: Dumb question...but here goes....

it can be mounted , most likly a replacement cape would be best keep in mind it will be difficult for a taxidermist
to mach the size & shape of the original without it to take measurements from but a taxidermist can help you get close
& provide a nice mount with just the horns

Re: Dumb question...but here goes....

Great....here is some more info......The front shoulders were pretty much mush from the bullet so when I butchered him, i stopped skinning at the front shoulders and the carcass is in my brush/burn pile......since it has been cold, I wonder if I could salvage the cape still? Will check it out when I get home from work....

Should be able to salvage it if it is not too nasty yet.

Re: Dumb question...but here goes....

You are going to want to get a replacement cape, either get one yourself like tundragriz suggests or your taxidermist should be able to obtain one based on your picture that would suffice - it may cost you a little extra.

The front shoulders from your deer aren't the problem - I would think the cost to repair the section left on your skullplate would be more than the cost of a replacement cape. But I guess if you ask 5 different taxidermists you may get 5 different suggestions on fixing your problem.

Good luck with it, and congrats on a nice buck.

Re: Dumb question...but here goes....

Well, went to my local taxadermist and he kinda gotta chuckle out of what I did and screwed with me a bit...all in good fun, lol. Then he said it would turn out much better with a replacement cape so thats the route I went and am happy I decided to get it mounted. Now for the grueling long wait to get the finished product back.......

Thanks for all the input guys...it really helped make my decision much easier.
