proper way to cape a deer for shoulder mount?

Is there a preferred way taxi's would like customers to cape their deer? I've always just kind of done it how I know how, but would like to make it as easy as possible on the taxi. Is there a diagram or vid for this? Thanks!

haha, if you don't know what you're doing, then your best bet is to skin it down as far as possible, cut the head off and let them do it.

As for the "back" part of the cape, I usually leave everything from just behind the front legs forward attached so there is extra hide there. They can trim off what they don't need but can't "grow" any back if you cut it off.

I'm talking in the front shoulder area. I'm always afraid to split the front legs up. I've always just cut up the front legs to the ribs, then up the ribs, and then accross to the brisket where I stopped when field dressing. It leaves the brisket and armpit area in tact. Just wondered how others do it, and if that is correct.

Re: proper way to cape a deer for shoulder mount?

Took my first one to be shoulder mounted this year and I minimized the slit for gutting, well below the start of the brisket. For the front legs, I rung around just above the hooves and pulled the skin through just like i was skinning a coon or smaller animal. I Just left the head intact and let him deal with that.

I figure better to have too much than not enough

That youtube video is pretty good.

I had a call a few years ago. Guy asked "How much of this deer hide do you need to do a full shoulder?" I told him to cut it in half and just bring me the whole front half, thinking it already had been skinned. It apparently had not been, as when the truck backs up to the door I see he took a sawzall and just cut the deer in half, carcass and all in it.

why don't you ask your taxidermist how he/she wants it done?

Be careful what you ask for and next time give a little more details in your instruction. Did he at least gut it before he sawzalled it?
