Tanning/preserving hide with hair on it

I brought back some patches of hide from the rump of the elk I killed in Colorado this fall. I bagged and froze them till I have time to mess with them.

I know when I was young, I used to skin and preserve rabbit hides, sort of just because. I know they weren't "display" pretty...the skin was sort of stiff and crinkly...but it didn't rot or stink. That's my objective....to get the skin preserved so it doesn't rot or stink. I don't really care if it's "nice"...if that makes sense.

Any suggestions on good tutorials or places for info? Be nice to not pay for this to be tanned.

Thanks!
