? on Skulls

While watching Mounted in Alaska I caught the tail end of them using a bleach solution to whiten skulls they apparently mixed the bleach into a paste form. I was wonder if anyone knew how much of what goes into it & how long to let it sit on the skull?

Thanks for everything,

Snapper

Re: ? on Skulls

yep, i ordered a kit from cabelas that is a powder form and you mix it with a little water and it becomes almost like yogurt consistancy and you smear it all over the skull and let it sit for 24 hours and it drys into a powder that you then use a stiff paint brush to brush off. it works awesome. the kit costs about $25 and you can get several skulls out of it. it also comes with degreasing stuff that you can use when you boil the skull but i didn't use that. heres a pic

Re: ? on Skulls

Thatís great thanks, as I have several skulls to do. I have a bear skull that held allot of grease that I am having troubles with. When you boil your skull you can put Tide in the water that will degrease your skulls while boiling as well. You did a great job thanks for the pick.
Take care,

Re: ? on Skulls

DO NOT USE BLEACH. It will continually eat away at the skull leaving behind a "powder" of bone.

You need to use peroxide. The stuff from a beauty supply store is good, there are pool cleaning products (the name escapes me) that are better.

Re: ? on Skulls

Go to Sally Beauty supply and get a jug of this stuff. It's the best thing I've ever used and is already a thick gel that sticks to the skull really well. Make sure to get the 40 volume since it's the strongest.

That is great I have a shop just down the road, thanks for advice. How long do you leave it on for?

Good luck on the line,

Re: ? on Skulls

I usually put it on in the evening then rinse it off when I get up in the morning. If there are alot of heavy stains on the skull you might need two applications but usually one does it.

Re: ? on Skulls

I read somewhere that using the beauty shop peroxide and whitener and wrapping in saran wrap and then use heat for a few hours worked well.
