Stretching Vs Tanning?

I am just starting out tanning fox hides. I intend to keep them for myself. As of now I skinning, salting, pickling, and oiling the hides. Do I need to put them on a stretcher and not salt them? I am under the impression that hides that are going to be sold go on a stretcher, hides that are going to be mounted or tanned get salted. Is this correct?
