Am I doing this right?

In 2014 I took a youth hunting and he got his first buck, a small 4 point. I told him that I would see if I could mount the rack for him. Well, time flew by, I got into other projects and honey do lists, and I just got around to getting his rack done. I had cut the rack off, but forgot to remove the fur then. About a week ago, I took the rack and put it in a bucket of water and dawn. Today I skinned the skull cap with no problem. I then boiled the cap and rack for about 1 hour. Now I scraped all the cartilage and spongy material off the skull plate to bare bone. I just put the skull plate in a plastic container and covered it with borax. I figure to check it in about a day or two, remove any caked on borax, and repeat with the borax for about a week or two before I start mounting it on a plaque. Am I headed in the right direction?

Re: Am I doing this right?

That will do plenty well enough. The bone may discolor over time if it has any fat left in it, but depending how you cover it it won't matter. My father used to take a 4 inch grinder and smooth all the rough edges off the skull plate, then use felt to cover the bone, usually green felt, and it was stitched on the back side to make it snug around the skull plate to keep any of the bone from showing then mount to a simple wooden plaque with two screws. If you go that route, drill pilot holes and screw it to plaque first, then remove it, cover and remount to the same holes.

Sadly most of my life has been wasted, but the rest I spent hunting, fishing, and trapping...

Re: Am I doing this right?

Yeah that should do it. I'd take it out of the borax in a day or so and brush off excess and let'er air dry. You'll be fine. Good luck
