Kind of Disappointed

Getting my first red fox tanned currently...

Shot my second fox, first gray tonight and my .223 was not as fur friendly as I had hoped or was reported from other hunters.

Alas, I also needed two shots.

One hole is on one side in the middle and looks pretty big. The other is in the back hind leg.

While I will buy another rifle specifically for fox,

Any advice on what I can do with this one? I really wanted it tanned, but I think it's not suitable for tanning at this point.

I also think I will get the skull cleaned, if it is indeed in anyway different from the red fox skull I have Chasin'Tail doing currently. Are red and gray skulls indeed different at all?

But, what can I do with the hide? Seems like such a waste. Front end is good as is the tail for sure.

Hi!
Gray fox are generally shaped the same but have a noticeable ridge down each side on the top.

I shot a coyote with a 22-250 at about 7 steps. The taxidermist did a great job patching up significant damage to the hide. If you take yours to a professional I'll bet you will be happy with the results

Didn't put enough dirt down....saw it, right off

Re: Kind of Disappointed

You could have a shoulder mount done, such as a pedistal mount.

Not the best pic nor best mount, but shows what a pedistal grey fox looks like.

Re: Kind of Disappointed

Do those pedestals or shoulder fox mounts look silly in real life because they are such a small critter as it is?

Re: Kind of Disappointed

My buddy has a shoulder mount grey fox. He found a log with a decent side hole in it and cut like a plate out of it. He placed the shoulder mt in the hole like it is sticking his head out.. It looks pretty good like that!
