Calling all taxidermists

Was wonder how you've been doing so far on business? Normal size for deer or bigger than usual? Have numbers been the same or down. I know here in luzerne county my taxidermist says numbers have been down for him thus far. Thoughts?

The economy is bad, a lot of people don't have extra money.

Re: Calling all taxidermists

Way up here in NW PA---both in numbers and SIZE! Huge bucks. Being 20 minutes from NY I have also been taking in quite a few from there since Saturday. Gonna be a great PA season if the weather cooperates.

Fishkrane.....I won't dispute your take on the economy but my experience has shown that when it comes to emotionally charged, treasured things like big bucks "extra money" is never an issue. I can't tell you how many times in the past 8 years I have heard, "I HAVE to get it mounted, its the biggest buck I've ever killed!"

Re: Calling all taxidermists

paul c... same here, they FIND the $$$ somewhere. they would rather eat mashed potatoes and spam for months over not getting the deer mounted. it will take more than this depression to make the american people give up their hobbies. we have been spoiled for way too long!!! charge it, charge it, charge it, it's the american way!

It's been normal so far, but the deer have been alot bigger. I do have more coyotes and fox to do this year than in years past.

Talked to several, and they are not getting as many deer or bears to mount as when the economy was booming. I guess when money is tight the optional things get eliminated.

Re: Calling all taxidermists

A better year this season. Slightly ahead of last year. Bucks seem to have shorter tines due in part to the heavy snow we had the month of Feb. last year. (southwest part of state)

As far as the economy- there are lots of bucks in the freezers, waiting on a deposit/christmas bonus to arrive.

Re: Calling all taxidermists

Slow here. I suspect there are freezers with stuff in them, but hunters are waiting till end of season in case they get a bigger one, or seeing if they can get the money together. I had one guy use his tax refund to pay for a "have to" deer mount.

Re: Calling all taxidermists

i think this is one of the times being one of the higher priced taxidermist in your area actually helps. here anyway, it seems the upper middle class managed to get through the slump with no effect on them...and these are the majority of mikes clients. most of them still have their jobs and never skipped a beat.

if you are near the bottom of the price range you most likely have clientle that had to scrape the $$$ together even when times were good. they are the ones that did go through and are going through hardships now...the blue collar "working man".

this is just my observation from our area anyway.
