What would you make with a deer hide?

The kid who is really interested in sewing with hides was gifted a processed deer hide (hair on) courtesy of an HPA member and I am trying to think of ways she could use it. I want to present some stuff together as a birthday present - leather needle, etc. Does anyone have any good, fun projects? The same HPA member is also giving her a foxskin to process herself.

throw pillows and hand bags are the easiest to start out with and could both work with hair on hides. A knife sheath or making a decorative drum and stretching the hide for a top is an idea too.

How about fur lined mittens .

Re: What would you make with a deer hide?

There is definitely a market for shooting/hunting bags for flintlock hunters. Lots of folks making decent ones, but if it's something they want to learn, there's a lot of good examples out there to learn from, and it's an item that does get bought semi-frequently by shooters/hunters.

Learning to make them could lead to a lifetime's pursuit of the craft.

Oh, thanks for responding everyone. I like all these ideas! I hadn't thought of pillows or a hunting bag, but I think she will like those ideas.

I need to find a class to send her to...

For ideas check out Tandy Leather website. Tandy has lots of tools and supplies as well. A simple awl to poke holes for stitching you can get at home depot, razor knife for cutting, latigo lace and needles for stitching. You can also used waxed thin string that look like rawhide. Tandy More geared to hair off leather projects but you can get some ideas to do.I have made turkey call bag, rattle bag, camera bag. All simple rectangles with pull string closers. Simple as it gets.
