Rocky or Danners?

I am looking to purchase a new set of boots for the upcoming white stuff.

I tried a pair of mucks last year for a day of grouse hunting, and took them back due to the seam tearing my heel up. Got a pair of Irish Setters in their place...after drying out they were too small. So...I am looking for a new pair of boots.

I went looking today, and settled on either a pair of Rocky Sport Utility Max's or Danner Pronghorn GTX w/1200 gr of thinsulate. I have owned Rocky work boots before and they were wonderful, but I don't have much experience with their hunting line. I have never owned Danners, but I have heard great things.

I guess more than anything I am asking everyones opinion specifially on the 2 boots mentioned, as well as the brands at large. Are the danners really worth $70 more?

Thanks guys and gals!!

Re: Rocky or Danners?

I would always buy a set of danners before even thinking about a pair of rockies. Way back when I first started hunting I had a pair of rockies when they were made in the USA. That pair was great last a couple of years till I wore them out, the 2 pair didn't even make it through one season. I have 3 pairs of danners that I wear now for different seasons. There is no contest.

the thrill is not in the kill, but in the experience

Danners or Irish Setters. I always bought Danners until one year I bought a pair of Irish Setters and now feel they are equals(IMHO).
The only pair of Rocky's I ever owned hurt my feet from day one!!!
If it is between Danner's and Rocky's---------The Danner's win hands down!!!

Re: Rocky or Danners?

Just had a buddy buy a pair of Danner Pronghorn's 2 months ago before our Mule Deer hunt. While breaking them in, they leaked in wet grass! Some Danahers are made in China... for example the Pronghorns. He returned them for a pair of Meindl's....

Hope this helps!

Re: Rocky or Danners?

Have an old pair of Rockies, wore out soles and had them redone. I can put them in a pail of water for over 24 hrs. and no leaks! Have heard the new ones suck so buyer beware.

Dangers and Irish setters are the same company. Buy the made in the USA Danners or not at all.

Re: Rocky or Danners?

I have had many pairs of older Rocky's that were great. Then last year I started looking for a great all around boot for cold to real cold hunting. I tried a couple of Danner's, Irish Setter's and they just did not fit me right so went back to Cabela's and tried these Meindle's, 1 word AWESOME! They are extremely well made and comfortable out of the box. They are a little more than the others but they do put them on sale. BTW those Danner's your looking at are made in China. Good luck on your decision.

Re: Rocky or Danners?

I would go with the
Danners. I have a pair of Danner Vanish and love them! Very lightweight for the long walks. Match them with some quality wool socks and you will be good to go.
