Merino is not your insulating layer. It needs to be worn in direct contact with skin so it wicks moisture and keeps your skin dry.

Warmth will come in the following layers. I have wool, fleece, and down as my mid layers.

Filson wool jacket and pants. Can't be beat for quietness, warmth and longevity. Yes they are expensive, however if you add up all the other hunting clothes you bought the last 20 years, you'll find Filson or any comparable wool clothing can't be beat.

An archer shoots his targets as far as he can. A bowhunter shoots his target as close as possible.

Depends on what it's like out. Have a Browning set with bibs and parka for really cold and nasty. Scent Blocker outfit at the other end. Wear my Woolrich when the mood strikes. Wool and fleece sweaters, poly/wool base layers and keep Thinsulate vest in my pack. Just picked up a Articshield jacket for my granddaughter at CDS sports by the Grove City Outlets. Was impressed with it and the store is a good place to shop.
