Anyone use thier phone GPS in the woods

I just got talked into getting a "crazy" phone that has just about everything but a dinner plate that pops out. I'm learning little by little on this thing and was wondering does anyone use the GPS on thier phone instead of a regular hh GPS? This thing has a couple of different mapping systems and I'm trying to figure out witch one is best.......Any ideas or any special apps that anyone uses?

Cellphones are not as durable as a dedicated GPS, and using the GPS will eat the battery life right out of your phone.

Very true! But...My gps (which is actually a decent model) doesn't have the detail like my Droid does. I can used the gps with multiple layers and have google earth, topo, etc and it can be just as accurate as my gps. I turn off my background data and I find my battery will last quite long when in gps mode.

Where I hunt my phone does not get a signal, would the GPS in it still work without the signal?

Unless you are the lead dog, the view is always the same...

Depends if the phone uses cell towers to calculate position or satellites

Depends on the Phone. My droid can be set to use satellites or wireless network. I agree that a cell can be a real life saver too! That and my Droid can take some really nice in the field photos too.

Re: Anyone use thier phone GPS in the woods

all the time. i have the HTC EVO 4g on Sprint and with the extended battery, i'm good for 2 days of steady use as long as I use "airplane mode" but i have to cache map content for the area I'm in. not real easy for the average user, but if you are willing to take the time to figure it out, it will be just fine. and it takes FINE photos
