Military Knives...The Pilot Survival Knife

Hope some of you that were into aviation remember this military knife... It was called a Pilot Survival Knife...It had a wrapped leather handle.. a Hunting blade the butt end could be used for pounding... The top of the blade had an area that could be used for sawing small piece of branches. It came in a leather sheath with ties to tie around your leg. I also came with a sharpening stone that was stored in a small flap on the knife sheath.. Many carried it in one of the pockets on their flight suits...Neat thing is that you could take a stick and tie the Pilot Knife on it and make it a spear too... All of the U. S. Coast Guard flight crew had them...I still see them for sale now.. Smokey Mountain Knives sells all kinds of military knives...

Does anyone remember this particular miltary knife?

Re: Military Knives...The Pilot Survival Knife

I was in Ubon, Thailand 69/70 and was in same squadron with a guy who put in the idea to put a metal guard on the bottom of the sheath. Seems on ejection pilots were getting stabbed in the leg with knife when they ejected. I got my knife from PE guys before they became an accountable item.

Re: Military Knives...The Pilot Survival Knife

I've known of them for decades but never got around to buying one until a year or so ago when I felt the need for something more then my standard skinning/gutting knife. I've found that it's a great knife for woods bumming and fit's the bill pretty close for an all around "survival knife". If I lost it I'd have to get another one, so I guess that tells you what I think of them.

I got a couple of those from an uncle who was a para-trooper. He used to get me all kinds of cool stuff before he passed away.

Great knife! I've had one since the early 1980's.

Our forefathers didn't bury their guns. They buried those that tried to take them.

Re: Military Knives...The Pilot Survival Knife

Neat thing...Is all the 5 armed forces used this knife.. I was in the U. S. Coast Guard and all the aviation crew on our air station had one of these knives.. No matter if they flew in a C130 B Hercules, HH 52A Sakorsky Helo, or HH3F Helo or HU 16 Albatross.
