Re: Hiking boot recco
If you want a stiff/hard sole, the Meindls are ok, the Asolo's are better. I have Meindl Perfekts for hunting. They are very, very good. I have Asolo Sasslong hikers, they are better. VERY hard/rigid sole, they are made to wear with a somewhat heavy load on your back. I've used them for everything from shoveling snow to toting a toddler around Hawk Mountain in a backpack carrier. They are outstanding boots, and very, very hard/firm sole on them, which makes nice work of rocky terrain, by the way.
Where the Meindls let rocks poke/prod my feet to a certain extent when scrambling on glacial rock, for example, the Asolos do not. Ever.
A great place to watch for deals on boots is Sierra Trading Post. I got my Sasslongs for about 1/3 off shelf price, free shipping, and help online to size them, which worked out perfectly (plus they send a label with them to return them if you're not happy). Sign up for their email/facebook lists and you get more deals/discounts sent to you.
