Need help on Remington 788 22-250

I have a chance to buy a Remington 788 in 22-250 one is just a typical 788
with no sights, the other 22-250 is a heavy barrel. Did they make 788's in the heavy barrel? 550 for the heavy barrel and 530 for the regular. Need some help guys, thanks!

Never seen or heard of 788's being produced in heavy barrels.

I would bet it's not a factory produced variation of the 788. Probably been re-barreled for some reason or another.

Neither have I. Are there any markings on the barrel?

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

I didn't look, but I was reading on them, and guys used them as a target rifles and would put heavy barrels on them to improve them back in late 60s early 70s

Re: Need help on Remington 788 22-250

The barrel that came on the original 788 was considered a medium weight barrel...a little thicker than your standard sporter 700 if my old memory serves me right... I bought one when they first came out and was surprised at how well it shot.. shooting big greens benchrest bullets and 4064 this rifle shot amazing groups.. I think the scope was a weaver T-16. That little rifle shot as good as any of the 700 varmints I had at the time for a fraction of the cost. Great rifle, one of the most accurate out of the box rifles I ever saw.

I think your right. I had a .223 and my friend had a 22-250 and the barrels were med/heavy.

I wanted a lighter / trimmer .223 for walking and sold mine. Big mistake! I have not had a .223 since then that shot as well. When I look at the logs now I see that mine was exceptional. My logs indicate that mine consistantly shot sub .5" groups. Boy do I miss that rifle.

Yeah, but this barrel is same size as a heavy barrel? I have 2 788 308. And they shoot amazing. The one 22-250 looks like the stock was cut to fit that heavy barrel. The other 22-250 looks just like my 308.s except for the 22-250 not having the sights
