Selling Guns Online - Transfers ?

So I'm selling a rifle on gun broker. I understand that I must ship the rifle to licensed dealer then the buyer gets it from them. Is there some transfer or receipt that is signed. I bought the rifle, but have no paperwork on it. If it is used in a crime... then what?

send a copy of your drivers license along with the gun when you ship it - the FFL will handle the paper work

Re: Selling Guns Online - Transfers ?

Some of the dealers that would receive the gun from you won't accept it from you. They will only accept it from another FFL holder, because some states require all guns crossing into their State to come FROM an FFL. So be prepared to bring it to your local dealer to have them ship it out for you.

Also, your bill of sale that you provide to the buyer, along with shipping documentation that you shipped the gun to the FFL is about all you will have to prove the gun is no longer yours. When I sell a gun on GB, I ALWAYS ship it through my local FFL, that way, he transfers into his inventory (which takes my name off of it) then he transfers it out to the buyers FFL. I never ship them myself, because of the same concerns you have.

Re: Selling Guns Online - Transfers ?

You will have the FFL number of the receiving FFL for your records. The disposition of the gun will be in the records of the receiving FFL. But it is true many FFLs will no longer receive guns from private individuals. The issue is if the gun is not picked up at the other end (maybe can't pass the instant check) then the FFL cannot simply return it by sending it back to a private individual. They are stuck in the middle of the transaction with the gun. If it goes FFL-FFL then they can simply return the gun to the sending FFL and wash their hands of it.

I prefer to not take it to a sending FFL as it adds $20-30 to the sellers cost but if the FFL they insist on using requires it then they have to pay double FFLs.

Re: Selling Guns Online - Transfers ?

I recently bought a gun off of the Encore Forums. Seller in New Hampshire, took it to his FFL, who shipped it to my FFL.

Piece of cake.
