480 Ruger vs. 454 Casull

I posted this elsewhere in the forums also...I'm going to be trading for a Super Redhawk in either 480 Ruger or 454 Casull. I was hoping some of you could give me some feedback and opinions on either of these calibers. I'm having a hard time deciding which gun to take on trade.

The nice thing about the 454 is, you can shoot 45 LC ammo out of it to practice with, and or plink with.........

The 454 is also quite a bit more powerful than the 480 is.......I don't find the 454 recoil to be too bad at all...

Re: 480 Ruger vs. 454 Casull

from what I have read the 480 is a milder factory cartridge then the factory 454. if you are reloading then I have heard you can get much more out of the 480. if reloading go with the 480 and if using factory ammo go with the 454.

Re: 480 Ruger vs. 454 Casull

My intentions were to reload either round. The components seem to be hard to come by for the 480, however the results of loading up or down are definitely intriguing! Seems like a versatile round that can be tamed down or loaded to an absolute HAMMER!!!

Of the two I would pick the 480 Ruger, however the 454 Casull has a wider array of bullets to choose from and I think the brass maybe easier to come by.

.454......Factory loads are easier to come by...Reloading components are more numerous....It has more power than the .480 in upper level loadings.

The only reason I can see for getting a .480 is.... "I want one".....And that is one heck of a good reason.

Don't let the name fool Ya!

I would go 480 and run a 400 grain bullet at 1000 fps. More punch than they'll ever need with less report.

Actually I would go 45 colt or 44 mag in a lighter better handling gun.

Re: 480 Ruger vs. 454 Casull

I haven't fired a .454, but the recoil in my .45LC +P loads is noticeably more than the .480 Ruger Alaskan I've shot. I would lean towards the .454 as a reloader or user of factory ammo; there have been lots of rumors about the demise of the .480. Get a .454 Super Redhawk and have it cut for moon clips and you can really plink for cheap with .45ACP, too.
