What gun do I need?

The wife gave me free reign to order a new gun for Christmas. We've set the max out of pocket at $700. I had my heart set on a Marlin 1895GBL (45-70 Govt'), and it's still a possibility, except I'm having second thoughts. What other options might I be missing?

I currently own;
Varmint weight bolt actions-.17HMR, 20 Practical, .243 Ackley improved.
Sporter weight bolt actions- 22LR, .223, 25-06, 7mm08, 300WSM

I've had .243's, 6.5x55, 270 & 308's. I also had a Remington 760 but didn't care for the pump action.

I've never had a lever action (no interest in a Dirty Thirty levergun) and something about the .45-70 has been calling to me. My biggest concern is not putting it to proper use and wishing I bought something that will see more field time.

Re: What gun do I need?

I see your furthest groundhog kill with 648 yards if long range groundhog kills interest you the way they do me why not get in to bench rest or F class shooting like I did and build yourself a project rifle I'm working on a savage target model that should be in the .2when I'm done. Competitive shooting is fun and very addicting. Plus you end up with a full custom rig built just for you. These are my interests just saying. This will be over budget sorry. Keep us posted

Where are you going to find a .243 AI for $700 and under anyways?! Mine was in excess of $1800 clams as you can really only find it chambered in semi-custom/custom jobs.

For the time, money and labor equivilant of way more that 700 bones too I guarantee. On a side, I sure do miss mine. Thing shot FLAT and was so rediculously accurate it wasn't funny. Took one of my longest one shot kills on PA whitetails with it too. Just a tad heavy to be lugging around the mountains.

Re: What gun do I need?

buy a used JM marlin 45/70 guide gun and a big loop lever. steer clear of the new marlins. if you shop you should be able to do it for under 7 bills and probably get a box of ammo too.

Re: What gun do I need?

I grew up swingin levers and it is my passion to this day.I think it will open you up to a whole new vision with rifles that you will highly enjoy.Especially the thumpin that comes from a big bore that can,t compare to another rifle.I can,t wait to take my 45-70 after hogs down south someday.

Re: What gun do I need?

45-70 is a great gun bought one 3 years ago its a Marlin 1895 guide gun JM stamped in stainless with factory porting. I put a leuy 1.5x5x20 on top and love it. Great gun and super accurate and doesnt have as much thump as some people think. Like Pump Gun said stay away from the new ones they have some quality control issues.
