Winchester XTR Featherweight 30.06 Opinions?

I have an opportunity to get a Winchester XTR 30.06 it is from the 80's looks in good shape with some scuffs on butt stock. What are your opinions on these I was originally looking at the Rem 700 series but this caught my eye. I can get if for $500 and it comes with a Leupold VX3 scope on it. Thanks!

They are fine guns. If its a deal, buy it. By the time the XTR series came along, a lot of the pre 64 hoopla had died off. I own several push feed M 70's, they all function perfectly.

VX3 is a $300 scope, sounds like a great deal. Push feed action as opposed to the original Controlled round feed, I happen to like this feeding better, but that's just me. You can get replacement stock for them now from online sources for 50-100 bucks if it is in really bad shape, but it sounds like a good deal if the scope is genuine.

Be sure the scope has a serial number, Chinese clones don't.

If you ever hunt dangerous game then you do not want a pushfeed..Easier jamming..

I can guarantee you that a whole bunch of dangerous game has been killed with push feed bolt guns. I have never had a push feed bolt gun jam on me. If I had a choice between a push feed Remington and CRF bolt gun, I would pick the Remington.
If it's good enough for the US Military, it's good enough for me.

Rob maybe you never been on the receiving end of an 1100 pound Alaskan Grizzly charge either with your pushfeed rifle..Most new remington rifles are one step up from junk with a big price tag..I would not trust my life on a cheap remington rifle..

This has been tested numerous times over the years by the best gun writers and engineers ever put together. The only way they ever got a push feed M70 or Rem. 700 to misfeed was to cycle it completely upside down. I fly the flag for old Winchesters, collect them like no tomorrow, shoot them, love them, but there is no way I would not go hunt anything with a push feed model. If you have to shoot completely upside down, your already a goner. Just an old misnomer that never made sense.

Have you? And if you were, how do you know a push feed would have failed? I have a few of those newer Remington and I would be more than willing to go up against any type of game animal, within the limits of the cartridge. I would be willing to bet that more guys hunt Alaska with push fed Remington s than CRF Winchesters.
