Entry level AR suggestions?

I'm looking to get a new(or used) rifle on the AR platform. I am ignorant to this style having never owned one. I was hoping to get some advice on what to look for and some suggestions on particular models to consider. I'd like to keep the cost below $1000. I have seen them anywhere from $600 to $1000 in the price range I'm looking for.

CDNN Investments usually has Colt carbines and a few others within that range. What are your uses? I have some that I used to shoot competition with, some I hunt with, and others I carry at work.

Walmart was selling Colt AR's for about $1,100. They also had Windham Weaponry AR's for about $850.

Windham's ARs have received some very good reviews.

You can't go wrong with a Windham Weaponry. They are the old Bushmaster (pre Remington). You also might want to check out Palmetto State Armory.

The Second Ammendment...
Its kind of a big deal.

I will be using the AR for plinking at the range and amusement. It is unlawful to hunt with an AR in Pennsylvania. The home defense aspect isn't really an issue. I have other weapons to cover that area!

My advice, purchase a 5.56 rather than a .223. Making your gun more versatile. Also, for quality's sake avoid the $600 plastic (polymer) specials and buy one with an aluminum lower. You can find what you are looking for within your price range if you shop a little.

I had intended on buying the 5.56 or at least one actually chambered in both 5.56/.223. I will check into the options that have an aluminum lower. Thanks!

Here is the AR that I have and I like it a lot. I bought it for about $100 less than what it is listed for.

You can buy a Windham at Walmart for 800 and change, or you can go PSA and put it together yourself. They sell completed rifles too.
