short barrel 8 mm mauser?

I was wondering what you guys thought about getting a surplus mauser and shortening the barrel to make a handy little brush gun. How short do you think I could go with the barrel, I was hoping to go 20in or so. Let me know what you guys think.

If an inline is just like a flintlock why don't you get a flintlock so you can hunt more seasons?

I have a Mauser 98 that someone sporterized before I got it. They cut the barrel to 20 inchs and put on nice iron sights. It shoots great and is very handy in tight spots. I also say go for it.

I love my military length 8mm Mauser and have always thought about buying another good JS to turn into a carbine with a peep sight or red dot for up close and nasty work on deer or bear in the brush.

Huntined,

Is 20in good or would you go bigger. What iron sights do you have one it. That is exactly what I am looking to do with it.

Like I said mine is cut to 20 inches and works good for me. If you would want you could have it cut to 22 inches and it would not be a problem in tight spots. The sights are Williams with a wide "v" back sight and a large bead on the front sight. They work great for quick, close shots but not very good for long range shooting. The stock is the military stock cut down. I am thinking of replacing it someday but it works fine for now. Go get yourself one for Christmas and have fun setting it up the way you want it, that's half the fun!

Tons of custom 8x57mm rifles floating around, you could probably find one already cut down no problem.

Thanks Jericho but I was hoping to do it myself. Need a winter project.

Look for a KAR98 [carbine], it is already shorter than the GAR98

Not a short barreled gun but here is a 98 Mauser I sporterized.
