last caliber for my safe??

I want a medium to lightweight hammer.. without spending more than 100$ on the gun and optics.. something that will take an elk at 500 yards if i ever go west. Which I plan to do someday.
My interests are
7wsm
300wsm
325wsm
7mm mag
300win mag
338 win mag
300 ultra

Now i know that the short mags will use a s.a. so they will be lighter out of the gate. Im not worried much about ammo as i reload.. kinda thinking a model 7 in 7 or 300 short mag is what I may go with. But the model 700 in lss is a beaut and can be found in the 700$ range in 300 win and 7mag..

Re: last caliber for my safe??

My suggestion...

M70 Extreme Weather in 338WM, although they are a little pricier than your budget. They are tough, light, accurate, and the 338 is renowned for it's punch on elk.

I have the same rifle in 300WSM and I'm considering whether I want to send it on to a new home and look for a 338 now.

Re: last caliber for my safe??

You might consider finding a used Model 7 SA and have it rebarreled into whatever you want. A little machining here and there and you'll have a sweet, custon lightweight rig capable of reaching out there for elk-sized critters. Put a nice Leupold on top and it's show time. BTW, I vote for .300 WSM but currently use a 700CDL in .300 WIN MAG.

Re: last caliber for my safe??

I'll give you my bias opinion(since it's what I own), but I love my Remmy 700 CDL in 300 RUM. I've got 4.5-14 scope on it. It's not heavy by any means, but it's not a lightweight either. Recoil isn't bad at all. I'm shooting my own handloads with retumbo and 200gr accubonds. It'll group around 2 inches at 300 yards when I do my part. Depending on what gun you get, short action calibers aren't always chambered in short actions, like the Tikka T3.

I think I'm an alright guy, I think I'm alright

Thanks.. and the budget was a typo...should have been 1000$ which was probably obvious. Any idea what the stock optiona are for the m70 extreme? Not a huge fan of black stocks.

You can choose from black or black. Lol. They come in a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock and stainless with a fluted barrel. None of that is my favorite for rifle appearances, but I do like my EW quite a bit.

The Medalist is a strong, durable, composite (ie not that horrid injection molded plastic many companies pass off as "composite") stock with an integral aluminum bedding block. While I liked the old style Winchester trigger a little better, the new "MOA" trigger on the current rifles, including EW's, is fairly simple to adjust and is a good trigger.

You could look at a wooden stock if you like. Or, I've seen examples on other forums where guys have painted their EW stocks with great results.

The biggest issue is that NIB the rifle will take your entire budget.

Re: last caliber for my safe??

Thanks again for more input. Not jumping into a purchase right away. I have time to look for a deal or save up some more.. deciding on a caliber is going to be the hard part. Unless of course i find a smokin deal on any of the mentioned choices.
