rem 700

I finally got my rem 700 extractor fixed before season. Took it out to shoot it, and after one shot the new factory type extractor failed..... Why ? At this point i'm torn between getting a sako extractor installed and retiring it, or throw some money at it, and getting the action blueprinted and adding a custom barrel.

Re: rem 700

who did the work? is it a magnum bolt face with the rivet, or a standard bolt face? how did it fail? did it break and or fail to pull the case out?

Re: rem 700

Put a sako extractor in it and your problem will go away.

Re: rem 700

Done by a local guy i've never dealt with before. Extracted an empty case when i picked it up, but failed after one shot. Looks like the the extractor sheared off again. This all began when i shot some hot reloads on a summer day. Magnum bolt face with the rivet. Pretty let down after paying 30 bucks for a 1/2 dia piece of spring steel and a mini 1/16 ? rivet.

Re: rem 700

Im a 700 fan and actually all i own. However extractors are there weakness. Not to be smart you should of went witht he sako to begin with. My local smith charges around 125.00 there is fair amount of work involved. But, go a step farther and treat yourself to a custom blue print action re-barrel to a custom ss barrel of your choice of caliber, twist, contour, nothing like it. Just make sure you finsh with good extractor of sako, etc. instead of remy.

Re: rem 700

if the extractor sheared off 2x there might be a chamber problem. might wanna look at that before spending any more money.

Agree. Something else is wrong here....Over the years I have pushed the envelope on 700s in various calibers and never experienced an extractor failure...

Re: rem 700

I too think something else is wrong. I was shooting over max load 7mm rem mag's clocked at 3,450 fps with a 140 gr ballistic tip ball. These numbers were observed in the fall. The gun malfunctioned on a 80 degree day. My theory is the pressure was higher in the heat. Literally had to beat the gun open with a drift of wood and a hammer. It was blowing the primers out. Anyway... i had already bought the replacement extractor before hearing the m700 had extractor issues. I fully blame my failure on me. The gun is 35 yrs old too. ...
